For over three decades, it has been a legal requirement to provide sanitary bins in female washrooms. This legislation has played a crucial role in ensuring that the needs of women are met in the workplace. However, times are changing, and at The Office Cleaning Company, we believe it is essential to stay at the forefront of change, striving for equality and sustainability in all aspects of our services.

Introducing Male Sanitary Bins in the Workplace

At The Office Cleaning Company, we are committed to providing the highest standards of commercial cleaning services and continuously adapting to the evolving needs and expectations of our clients.

Today, we are excited to share with you a significant step we are taking to promote inclusivity and environmental responsibility within your workplace.

We are pleased to announce that we are promoting and introducing male sanitary bins in the workplace, several large organisations have already implemented them for example you will now find that all Moto service stations have them on site, to name but a few.

Here’s why we believe this change is important:

In a recent committee meeting by the Greater London Assembly (GLA), the body analysed the way in which we typically dispose of our waste and the impact of this on the environment. Whilst there’s still considerable work to be done in educating all people about the damage of flushing waste down the toilet, it’s acknowledged that the lack of legislation surrounding men’s washroom facilities is a problem.

Put simply, men who use sanitary items such as incontinence pads are somewhat forced to flush them due to a lack of viable alternative. The GLA is urging public and private sector organisations to supply men with sanitary bins in their washrooms.

As an example, Germany has already updated their own legislation in recent years so that workplaces must supply at least one lidded bin in each male bathroom.

A wake-up call for all businesses

The research reveals that fewer than just a fifth (17%) of men have facilities in their place of work to dispose of sanitary waste in male washrooms, highlighting a severe lack of support from businesses. This lack of support is felt particularly by those who suffer from continence problems, with just 36% feeling that their sanitary needs are met when using public washrooms. Such is the extent of the challenges that they face, nearly three in ten (29%) have been forced to carry a used incontinence pad in their bag or coat due to a lack of facilities. These hardships are compounded by the stigma that faces incontinence sufferers – over half (54%) do not feel comfortable telling their close friends or family, and 44% are too embarrassed to seek medical advice.
